What catches people out

  • One of very few countries using a square photo. 2 x 2 inches, which is 51 x 51 mm.
  • Head height measured chin to crown must be between 1 and 1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm).
  • Taken within the last six months, and it must reflect your current appearance.
  • No glasses. This has been the rule since 2016 and is a common reason for rejection.
  • Digital uploads for the DS-160 must be JPEG, square, 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels, under 240 KB.

Requirements are set by US Department of State and they change. Confirm the current rules with them before printing — this page is a reference, not an approval.
